    motive power

The Gila Pacific RR stable of locomotives come from a variety of manufactures from brass RTR models to the zimac and plastic kits. The kit manufactures are mostly the older MDC Roundhouse and Mantua kits with open frame motors. I have converted several of these kits with new can motors and will change the other models in the future. DCC and sound modules will also be installed.

The last few years I have purchased a few of the newer Bachmann, Athearn Roundhouse and BLI RTR steam locomotives, some with DCC and sound already installed. I have added DCC and sound to other new locos. These locos still need to be detailed, painted, decaled and weathered before they go into service on the Gila Pacific.

Here are a few of the railroads finished steam locomotives.

    GP Loco #4
Gila Pacific RR Shay #4 is a PFM brass model built by United, purchased in 1968, and was the second piece of brass motive power. It was disassemblied and painted with an airbrush using a lighted Floquil Grimy Black paint. The detail lanterns, etc are SSLtd soft metal parts that were brush painted before being added to the locomotive. The weathering was done with thinned Floquil paints and an airbrush. The cylinders were given a light spray of thinned Floquil Engine Black to give them that freshly oiled look. The engineer is a Campbell-Weston old timer metal engineer and the standing man and dog are Preiser plastic figures. This locomotive is a wood burner.

    GP Loco #5
GPRR Climax #5 is a brass PFM model built by United and is also a wood burner. The metal frame, truck side frames, water tank and boiler were painted with lightened Floquil Grimy Black and the cab was painted tuscan red. Pre-stained strip wood was added to the water tank deck. Masking tape was used to cover the roof and painted gray-black with “tar lines” added at the over laps with engine black

A 3/16” brass bar was added to both sides of the boiler for more weight and then split short sections of twigs for firewood was glued to the top of the brass weights. The engineer and fireman are Labelle Industries no. 7004 plastic figures.

    GP Loco #12
The 10-wheeler #12 is a Tyco RTR locomotive with additional brass detail casting, sheet brass and brass wire added. The rear drivers have been moved forward with a new slot in the frame. The tender has a wood planked coal bunker added.

The cab interior was spray painted Floquil coach green, the smoke box gun metal. The balance of loco was painted with lightened Floquil Grimy Black and heavly weathered with thinned coats of Floquil applied with an air brush.

The detail parts used for this loco: Cal Scale: 219 brake cylinder, 257 air pump, Kemtron: TR-8 headlight, X-76 water hatch, MDC: HX900 markers, 2 pair

    GP Loco #22
The 2-8-0 Consolidation #22 is a Model Die Casting Roundhouse kit. The locomotive was built per the instructions except a scratch built air hose was added to the pilot. The air hose was formed from a skeleton of .015” dia brass wire and wrapped with fine copper wire. This detail is on most of the brass locos that I own.

The locomotive was painted with lightened Floquil Grimy Black and heavily weathered. The engineer is a Campbell-Weston old time engineer.
