Gila Pacific RR Logging caboose #119 is a scratchbuilt freelance design that was built to provide a way to ship less-than-carload supplies from Gila to the logging camp at Ponderosa. The spartian caboose is located in the front end of the cabin with the rest used for supplies. The short design was needed for the short switchback used to get to the logging camp. The car is only 18 feet long and the cabin is 12 feet long. The cabin design is loosely based on a model by Jack Work Rail and Tie Car that was presented in the October 1968 issue of Model Railroader magazine.
The car was built of individual scale strip wood for the frame and decking. The cabin sides and ends are 1/32” thick scribed basswood sheet with 1/16” spacing. The stake pockets U-bolt and door hinges are Grant Line plastic castings. The standing man on the platform is a
Campbell-Weston metal figure and the standing man and dog are Preiser plastic figures.
A construction article authored by me on how to build this freelance logging caboose appeared in the June 1979 issue of Railroad Model Craftsman.
