Book Review:
There's a sparkle to youth of any age, and there are activities that bring out a zest for life. In this large-sized volume, Ron Tarjany, master woodworker, has created an assortment of wooden toy vehicles that can easily be put together. These include a small steam freight train, a work equipment crane, an old timer delivery, a sports car, even a helicopter, a low wing plane an old timer coupe. "Over the years I have tried my hand at various aspects of woodworking and find toy making the most enjoyable and most relaxing. All you need to do to build a wood toy is lay out the pieces for the toy on the thickness of material needed. Drill all the holes in each piece." Each section of the book, featuring a different toy, begins with a photograph, clear instructions, illustrations showing the various views and dimensions, and a diagram of how the pieces of the toy fit together. The biplane is one of the more ambitious, with its double level of wings and propeller and wheels and fuselage. The most moving parts? The front end loader. Close behind is the large crane: "The cab rotates, the boom goes up and down and the hook goes up and down on a cable. The wheels, hidden behind the track, make it easy to roll on any surface." The minimum tools needed for the wood toy shop? A band saw, a bench drill press and a bench disc sander. 30 Toy Vehicles of Wood is a bright, creative offering from the land of delight.   Jay Bale, The Book Reader
